Buy a motorcycle driving license A1 and A2 is the first step for those wanting to become full-time bikers. It permits riders to ride a bike up to 125cc, with a maximum power of 11 kW and to transport passengers.
After passing the CBT Theory and Practical Tests, the driver can upgrade their licence to category A at 19. This allows the driver to operate any motorbike and to carry a passenger.
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
CBT training is required before you can buy a motorcycle license. The CBT comprises both classroom and practical training. The classroom portion teaches you about the safety issues of riding a bike, while the practical portion is completed on state-owned motorcycles. Your trainer will teach you how to operate the basic controls of the bike and will also demonstrate pertinent low-to-mid speed maneuvers.
The Module 1 test consists of demonstrating the various manoeuvres to the examiner in an approved centre. The first requires you to demonstrate your ability to "wheel" on a motorbike, and the second part requires that you navigate through a figure-of-eight. After having completed Module 1, you'll be able to move to the A2 licence. This allows you to ride any motorcycle or scooter with an output of 35 kW. Theory Test
You will need to pass a theory test in order to obtain a motorcycle driving license A1. This is not a test for cars and the questions are specific to motorbikes. Once you have successfully completed the theory test you can take your A1 practical motorcycle test. You can book your A1 practical motorcycle test up to three months prior to your 17th birthday. After passing the A1 test, you are able to consider upgrading to a full-A license. It is essential to think about your long-term goals before deciding on a route. If you are planning to ride faster and larger bikes in the future, an A2 restricted license may be more appropriate for you.
A1 holders can upgrade to a full A license after passing two practical tests. The first one is on a motorcycle with a maximum power output of 11 kW. The second is a small motorcycle that is up to 120cc. If you pass these tests, you are able to ride your motorcycle or scooter with a passenger and without an L plate.
You must be at least the age of 24 and have your A1 license for at least two years in order to be eligible for the A2 exam. You can upgrade to a full A licence if you are younger. However, you must hold your A2 for at minimum two years. You can also take the A1 and A2 test at the same time and then apply for the full A licence once you turn 21.
Practical Test
The practical test is an essential component of your program of training and the final step before you are able to purchase a motorcycle license. The course will prepare for the test in practice and is split into two parts, referred to as modules one and two. Both modules will follow the same format, but will differ in the focus.
Module one is focused on closed circuit-riding, while the second module is on public roads. The tests will be determined by the skills you've acquired during your CBT and motorcycle training. The tests are designed to assess your ability to ride a motorbike and show that you understand the dangers associated with motorcycling.
In both of the modules you will be expected to complete a variety of exercises such as left and right circles on the road as well as figure-eights. You will also have to execute controlled u-turns. You will need to provide the bike you will be using for the test, along with a driver for transporting the examiner. The driver must be at minimum 21 years old and prove that they are able to safely operate a vehicle and motorcycle.
After passing the practical test, you can purchase the motorcycle with a motor capacity of 125cc or more and a power output of no more than 11kW (around 14.8 horsepower). This is a great option for those who wish to start with a small amount and progress their experience gradually. You can't ride a motorcycle with an A1 license if you want to carry Pillion riders.
After a set period that varies depending on the region you can upgrade to A1. You can then move on to the A2 licence, and after a further period, you'll be eligible for the full A licence that is unrestricted.
It's important to think about your future plans and levels of comfort before deciding on which licence you should obtain. Some drivers may find that their A1 licence is restricting and decide to take the A2 alternative, while others will want to go straight for the A licence as soon as is possible.
Upgrade to A2
The upgrade to A2 is the first step on the ladder to an unrestricted licence. This enables you to drive motorcycles up to 125cc with or without a sidecar. It also allows you to ride up to 35kW/47hp. This is quite an increase in power over the A1 license can provide. This license permits you to transport passengers as well as use motorways.
The new rules were introduced as part of the government's plan to ease regulations whenever possible for the benefit of drivers and riders as well as the industry. The government believes the changes will allow more people to take up riding for fun and as an occupation. So, they permit individuals to complete their motorcycle test with lower power than previously allowed. These lower-powered vehicles are required to be able to meet the other requirements for the category A2 test, such as cylinder size and power-to weight ratio.
You must be at least 24 years old to upgrade from an A1 license to a category-A licence. A valid theory test certificate is also required. You must have passed your A2 practical test in less than two years following the completion of your CBT or you must have completed the entire progression route beginning with an A2 restricted license before moving to a full A licence two more years later.
Other restrictions are also in place for example, the requirement that you've held your A2 licence for a minimum of two years before applying for an upgrade. The cost to upgrade to a category A licence is around EUR400. This includes the DGT fee psychotechnical test, theory and practical exams, and any driving school training which may be required.
It's a lot less than the cost of an A1 license, which includes CBT, theory, and tests in the practical. This is because people already have some of the knowledge required for A2, so many of the initial steps are omitted. This doesn't affect the time required to complete the process because the majority of people already have a clear idea of what they have to do.
